Sharing content between AEM websites

ETH Zurich and its organisational units operate a variety of websites and does not consider these websites as isolated entities but rather as a whole: the "ETH web". Users will gain access to ETH information in a variety of ways and if from a search engine, a user may not initially land exactly where they need to be. It is up to authors to provide a clear and efficient path to needed information.

Avoid duplicate content

For better search results and keeping information consistent, it is best to avoid duplicate information being displayed on various websites in the ETH domain. Instead information should be provided in one centrally located place and all others should link to the information as needed. If using the protected pageAEM search picker functionality, links will automatically update URLs if a target page or asset is moved or renamed.

Options for shared content

For standard ETH information, the images and documents provided in the Common content area of AEM can be utilized freely. These should be regularly updated and maintained and thus ensures that the correct information is being accessed when linked to from different websites.

Ideally for usability and search engines, it is best not to duplicate content and link to a main source of content. However, in some rare cases, this may not provide the best option. There are two additional ways to share content in AEM, but should have some coordination between authors in order to provide the most current and consistent information possible and both should be used sparingly and avoided if possible.

  1. To display a single source of information from one component on one webpage to another webpage, the protected pageParagraph reference can be used.
  2. To display the content of an entire webpage in another location in AEM, the protected pageLive copy functionality can be utilized.

IMPORTANT!

  • For copyright reasons, if you are not the owner of the source content – you should get the permission of the website owner to use their content on your website. This is especially important for images and documents not in the Common content area of the system.
  • Livecopies of news channels or articles should never be done in the system.
